A Short Guide to Microblading Blades

Aug 31,2022
One of the many advantages of microblading is that it is customizable. This means that a good microblading artist will carefully assess the client's skin prior to treatment and select the appropriate blades, i.e. needles and pigments, to suit their skin type and achieve the desired results.

Since everyone's skin thickness and characteristics are different, it is only logical that the artist would use different blades for different clients. But how to choose the best blade? What other microblades are even available?

Here's what you should know about the shape, length, and other characteristics of microblades.

What types of microblades are there?

The basic division of microblades is based on stiffness. There is a difference between soft blades and hard blades.

Flexible blade

Features of flexible blades (also known as soft blades):

Consists of 7-21 needles that are tied together using plastic giving them flexibility. Great for beginners and advanced microblade artists.

The base absorbs some pressure and prevents the blade from going too deep, making it suitable for any skin type; better for thin, sensitive or mature skin than hard blades.

Hard blade

Features of hard blade:

The base of the 7-21 needle is usually made of stainless steel. Recommended for advanced microblade artists who already have the right pressure sense and know how to find the sweet spot, and perfect microblade depth.

Hair strokes are sharper than those made with flexible blades

Tends to penetrate deeper into the skin with less pressure.

Not a good choice for sensitive and thin skin.

For normal, thick, and hard skin.

Microblade length

Now that we've explained the difference between flexible and rigid microblades, let's focus on one of the most important characteristics - the length of the microblades. Their length is determined by the number of pins. The more pins it has, the thinner they are.

7-9 stitches - These are the smallest micro blades for creating fine short strokes, best for drawing short and middle strokes, and great for adding more strokes to your grooming appointments.

10-13 needle - For medium stroke lengths, suitable for most customers. The most commonly used are 12-pin blades.

14-17 stitches - Great for longer hair strokes and outlines.

18-21 stitches - For longest hair strokes, should be used sparingly and should only be used by experienced artists.

Microblading blade shape

Microblading blades also come in different shapes.

Angled or angled blade (S blade) - great for beginners and easier to control depth.

Curved blade (C blade) - Used to create curved strokes for the most natural effect.

U-blade - The shape of the letter U, consisting of 12-21 needles. These are very sharp and are therefore recommended for more experienced artists for creating curved brushstrokes. They can be flexible blades or hard blades.

Microblade diameter

It is also important to know the thickness of the needle.

0.20–0.25mm needles are used for thicker skin and thicker hair strokes.

0.18–0.20 mm needles are used for average-thickness skin and are the most commonly used.

0.15–0.18mm needles are nanoneedles for very crisp, fine hair strokes.

Most commonly used blades

Every artist is looking for the perfect blade to get the best, sharper results for their clients. Because microblading is a customizable treatment, artists can combine blades with different needle configurations.

The needle should be thin to create crisp strokes that won't blur once healed.

The most popular is the 18 U-shaped blade. Since this blade has 18 needles, they need to be very thin, so they range in thickness from 0.15 to 0.18mm.

How to choose the right microblades?

Finding the perfect blade takes a lot of practice and experience. Microblading artists usually start with a slanted blade, then switch to a U-blade when they feel more confident. Practice and test micro blades of different lengths, shapes, and needle thicknesses until you find the one that works for you.
